Brilliant Esther and Something New for Writers (who want to earn some money!)

October 19th, 2011

Invitations

I haven’t made you all privy yet to some exciting news happening behind the scenes.

Let’s just say it has to do with the words book, deal, publisher, WOOT! Mkay?

I can’t officially announce anything just yet, but I can tell you that I didn’t set out trying to get a book published. If anything, I thought, “maybe when I’m 50 I’ll write a book.” Heh.

Well, a certain NYT bestselling author called me up and told me she wanted to support what I was doing and one way she could do that was to put me in touch with her brilliant agent Esther.

Enter Esther, literary agent extraordinaire!

(Agent to NY Times bestselling authors Lysa TerKeurst, Matthew Barnett and George Barna, Mark Batterson, David Kinnaman, Phil and Amy Parham of The Biggest Loser, Michael Franzese, Tim McGraw, Sara Evans, Tom DeLay and Chris Seay – I know!)

But this post isn’t about me or my soon-to-be-revealed exciting news (squee!). Nope, this post is about Esther and what she has created for all of us writers out there.

Well, all of us writers who would like to earn a living with our writing.

Friends, let me introduce you to the re:write conference – Rethink Your Platform, Turn Content into Profit, and Seize the Future.

Doesn’t that just get you fired up?!

Esther has brought together an amazing line-up of speakers who are going to teach and share their experiences with traditional publishing and OTHER forms of publishing that have led to successful income generation. Listen, if you can swing this conference, you’ve GOT to go. You are going to learn SO much, and, hello, you’ll get to hang out in San Diego, CA!!!!! I’ll be there and it will be my first time on the West Coast; I can’t wait!

SO, start figuring out how to get there so we can plan on having coffee together {ahem}. You can take 10% off your registration with code: SarahMae (good through December 31st).

Give Mom a Hug

“We only get one shot at it. Once they’re grown, they’re grown. Give up on doing it perfectly but do it with a lot of heart and a lot of laughter and a WHOLE LOT OF JESUS. And rock them all you can.” -Beth Moore, Let’s Play 20 Questions

I Got a Mammogram

October 15th, 2011

Pink ribbon on my handbag

This morning I went to the local outpatient center and got a mammogram.

About nine months ago I asked my doctor if she would sign an order that allowed me to get a mammogram (they don’t normally do this until you’re 40 years old-I’m 31). I explained to her that women in my family had died of cancer, and that although my grandmother didn’t die of breast cancer, she did find a lump in her breast that led to the discovery of other cancer in her body. Also, I had an abortion at 16, and while the National Cancer Institute does not affirm the link between breast cancer and abortion, there is enough evidence for me to want to get checked out early.

So today I did.

And friends, it was no sweat. The woman was gentle and kind, and the process didn’t hurt one bit. There was some pressure from the x-ray machine, but it was fine.

I’m so glad I went. If it turns out they find something, than praise God I went in for early detection. If they don’t find anything, than praise God for peace of mind.

I encourage all of you who are 40 and older or have had an abortion or breast cancer in your family to get a mammogram, and this is the perfect month to do it-it’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

I’m All Over the Place! Love, Guilt, and Getting Dressed, Oh My!

October 14th, 2011

Plane / Travel / Sky

Today, I’m writing at…

(in)courage, where I’m talking about practical ways to love well. Here’s an excerpt:

“But what if we loved all the more those who were “found out”? What if we loved ourselves all the more because we are already “found out” by the One who weaved us?”

Homemaker’s Challenge, where I’m talking about cleaning and guilt. Here’s an excerpt:

“Guilt. It can wreck a soul. It can confuse, and halt life. Guilt throws a wrench in the sane mind.

I’m talking about the guilt that comes from not having faith. False guilt. The guilt that weighs chaos on your spirit. If you know God and you believe in and follow Jesus, then false guilt should be buried in the mud and mire from which you were saved from.”

The Better Mom, where I’m talking about getting dressed. Here’s an excerpt:

“…you’re still not dressed.

Not really anyway. You wouldn’t venture out to the coffee shop like this (maybe the drive through, but that’s it), and you sure as heck wouldn’t show up for lunch at your husband’s work looking like you do…all disheveled and slightly stinky (have you brushed your teeth yet?).

And here you are just a wee bit (I’m being nice) frumptastic for your family. How do you feel? Do you feel productive or lazy? Energized or tired? Pretty, or… {shudder}.”

No Turning Back

October 10th, 2011

Changing leaves

The leaves of this beautiful October are changing, and so am I.

I’m choosing for my life margin, simplicity, contentment, and a faithful pursuit of my God. I recognize the babel in my heart, the divided mind, and the stress of trying to do to much (even if there is a thrill to it…oh, and there is!). My heart heard the Holy Spirit and He offered me the truth. I wouldn’t have heard it if he hadn’t taken me away into the quiet where God is heard. He took away the distractions, He laid bare my weaknesses, and my heart broke. He is so good to take me to the desert so I can only drink from His well.

The faithful know to be still and to carve out the quiet moments in order to discern what is from the hand of the Lord and what is not. Without the quiet moments the waves of our desires or the opinions of others are a current that can easily sweep us away.

Today, I’m choosing to be faithful, to quiet my wild heart, and cling to His truth. All because…

“I have decided to follow Jesus…

Though I may wonder, I still will follow…

The world behind me, the cross before me…

Though none go with me, still I will follow; no turning back, no turning back.”

Discipleship

October 9th, 2011

‎”But even as Jesus took three years off from the work of the universe in order to pass his ministry on to his disciples, to live with them, eat with them, love them, instruct them, so as mothers, if we want the same kind of life-changing impact on our children, it will require the sacrifice of our time, our commitments, and it will be inconvenient and life-consuming. But leaving godly disciples is the greatest work we will ever achieve.”

-Sally Clarkson, Discipleship is a choice that will cost you your time and your life

A True Creative; Artist God

October 8th, 2011

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.” Isaiah 40:28
