You Are My Sunshine…

That’s my song, my favorite childhood song; my dad used to sing it to me.

Now I sing it to my babes, but I replace “sunshine” with their names.

Do you have a favorite childhood song?  Do your kiddos?

Would you tell me for free stuff?

Tommy Nelson, super-cool-Jesus-kiddo-stuff, has something fun up their sleeve this holiday season and they want you to be a part of it…

“One of our favorite things about kids is there lack of any inhibition whatsoever – especially when it comes to singing. Little ones will belt out their favorite song, or whatever pops into their head, whenever they feel it coming on. They have little regard for tone or pitch, but throw their whole hearts into every note! In honor of their fearless vocal stylings, Tommy Nelson is kicking off the Christmas Countdown with a week of singing.”

What’s up for grabs this week?

Each day this week Tommy Nelson is giving away a different Bible story and song book from the Grammy award-winning Stephen Elkins.  On Friday they are giving away a prize pack with an iPod and an Elkins full library!!!

We have that first storybook with CD book “100 Ways to Know God Loves Me.” It’s great!

    1. A bushel and a peck
My mama sings this to all her grand children.

    2. I actually sing all the old time nursery rhymes to my kids, instead of saying them.

    3. B I N G O

    4. Itsy Bitsy Spider

    5. There’s Something About That Name (the old hymn)

I will never forget working in a daycare and listening to a caregiver in the baby room rocking and singing that hymn to the baby. I was only 20 years old. But I can still hear her singing that and thinking the sweetest. In emotional times I have found myself singing that to my babies.

    6. Candy Girl
Was it by the Jackson 5?

    Have a blessed week

I don’t remember singing songs with my parents as a kid. But I had a tape with the song “There’s a Hole in my Bucket” and I adored that. (Otherwise I also remember rewinding a Madonna tape to listen to Material Girl over and over and over haha).

I love singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow with my boys. I was just teaching Tristan “You are my Sunshine” yesterday. :)

My favorite, and there’s are songs I made up for each one. My two homegrown children, I sang it while they were in the womb, my China born daughter, when she came home to sleep in a strange bed and learn what family was.

    Here are the songs>

(To the tune of Domonic, from the Singing Nun)
    Nico, Nico, Nicholas
    A boy named Nicholas
Grew up to be a man
    He really was quite smart
He loved God with all his Heart,
    Nicholas a godly man.

(To the tune of oh Christmas tree)
    Anthony Oh ANthony
Oh how we love our Anthony
    Anthony oh ANthony
    A godly boy named ANthony
For he loves God with all his heart
He really really is quite smart
Oh Anthony oh Anthony, Oh how we love our ANthony.

(To the tune of Little Rabbit Foo foo)
Little Princess Qing Qing (pronounced Ching-Ching)
    All the way from China
    Mary Elisabeth
    My little China Girl
She loves God with all her heart
She really really is quite Smart
    Little Princess Qing Qing
    I love you China girl.

I know the words are all similiar, but the melodies are different and each loves their special song.

My daughter’s (2 yr.) name is Alaire and she loves for me to sing Baby Alaire, Baby Alaire….. to the tune of Oh My Darlin’ Clementine. My son (4 yr.) calls When the Roll is Called up Yonder his “crying song” because since birth whenever he is upset I sing it to him and he calms right down.

We have several we sing our children (almost) every night. We have since they were all itty-bitties. We sing “You are My Sunshine”, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” the “ABC’s” and “1 little, 2 little, 3 little Indians…”. Also helped with learning their numbers and letters…all of them (so far) have said their ABC’s and numbers up to 10 before they were 2 (or right around the time they turned 2)

When I was little, my grandmother owned a dry cleaners that my mom worked at and of course in the summer I’d go to work with her. The seamstress would put me on her knee and sing,

“Found a peanut, found a peanut, found a peanut just now, I just now found a peanut, found a peanut just now.

Cracked it open, cracked it open, cracked it open just now, I just now cracked it open, cracked it open just now.

It was rotten, it was rotten, it was rotten just now. It just now was rotten, was rotten just now.

Ate it anyhow, ate it anyhow, ate it anyhow just now, I just now ate it anyhow, ate it anyhow just now.

Got sick, got sick got sick just now, I just now got sick got sick just now.”

When I got married she wanted to wrap up a peanut for me but she didn’t think my very proper grandmother would like it.

Every night that my dad was home (he’s a firefighter, so every 3 days he was gone) he would read to me and sing me to sleep. My favorites were You Are My Sunshine and Somewhere Over The Rainbow. But he would also sing me a billion other ones–a lot of country, whatever he liked at the time, so some were too grown-up for me to get, but I loved his voice.

I think this is one of the best things you can do for kids, it’s calming.

My family had a record player and at our church they did a musical show on the Music Machine!!
There’s so many songs but it’s one of my favorite kids classic.
My kids today are suck on a french bible song that we sing every night.
    Here are the words:

Not original, but we love Jesus Loves Me. A few weeks ago we were visiting our home church and the pastor had a little impromptu concert while we waited to go down to the potluck. He asked for requests. My 4 yo went running to the front of the sanctuary (gasp) and said “I’ve gotta song!” The pastor asked him which one and he said proudly, “Jesus loves me!” And that sweet pastor swept my son up into his arms, sat him on his lap and played the song while they sang it together. I cried through the whole thing.

One of my favorites though was a song called, “The Land of Lemonade and Lollipops”. It has such cute words and there’s a tape of me singing it in a very high little voice when I was about 2. And my little girl used to do the same thing!(she has since moved on to other favorites) I’ve always sang alot to both of the kids….and my son always liked you are my sunshine as well. We just got a piano and he now wants me to play for him to sing,”Thank You, Lord” all the time. Music is so much fun and such a great way to teach the kids to worship and praise the Lord!!

I honestly don’t remember my mom ever singing to me, but that didn’t stop me from singing to my kiddos! We have the same tune (something my hubs made up on the spot and it stuck!) for each of our three kids but with different words.

    For Gigi:
Gi-bo rocking with Dad, rocking with Daddy
Gi-bo rocking with Dad, rocking with Daddy
When she rocks, she goes kick! kick! kick!
    Rocking with Daddy!

    For Claire:

Claire Bear rocking with Dad, rocking with Daddy
Claire Bear rocking with Dad, rocking with Daddy
When she rocks, she goes waa! waa! waa!
    Rocking with Daddy!

    For Deacon:
D-bud rocking with Dad, rocking with Daddy
D-bud rocking with Dad, rocking with Daddy
When he rocks, he goes Kung Fu! Fu!
    Rocking with Daddy!

Very silly, but the kids loved it, and they still smile and giggle whenever they hear those songs today!

My favorite song was a song that would chime when my grandmother’s alarm clock would go off every morning. I used to spend a couple of weeks every summer with her and she would set up a cot in her bedroom for me. Every morning, I would wake to her singing along to her alarm clock:

    “Oh what a beautiful morning,
    Oh what a beautiful day,
    I’ve got a wonderful feeling,
    Everything’s going my way.”

Here is the song in it’s entirety:

    Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’
Music by Richard Rodgers, lyric by Oscar Hammerstein II
Copyright © 1943 by Williamson Music

There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow,
There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow,
The corn is as high as an elephant’s eye,
An’ it looks like its climbin’ clear up to the sky.

    Chorus:
    Oh what a beautiful morning,
    Oh what a beautiful day,
    I’ve got a wonderful feeling,
    Everything’s going my way.

    Repeat chorus

All the cattle are standing like statues,
All the cattle are standing like statues,
They don’t turn their heads as they see me ride by.
But a little brown mav’rick is winking her eye.

    Repeat chorus

All the sounds of the earth are like music,
All the sounds of the earth are like music,
The breeze is so busy it don’t miss a tree,
And an ol’ Weepin’ Willer is laughin’ at me.

    Repeat chorus

It wasn’t until later in life that I realized that this song was the opening song in the musical “Oklahoma!”. I just remember it being a sweet little song that my grandmother used to sing to me with a smile on her face to gently wake me each morning I spent with her. I can’t hear it any other way.

We are big fans around here of all the childhood songs you’ve already listed, but our most sung lullaby is “I Love You Lord”

    I Love You Lord
    And I lift my voice
    To worship You,
    Oh my soul,
    Rejoice!

    Take joy, my King
    In what you hear.
May it be a sweet, sweet song
    In your ear!

I’m thankful I grew up singing songs to Jesus. They are all still in me from my childhood and come out when I tuck in my kids.

One memorable song which comes to mind is ‘Don’t Worry Be happy’. When visiting my Aunty in New Zealand one year she gave us a book with pictures to illustrate each verse of the song. the book also came with a CD. The Cd however only had the one song on it! So we had heaps of fun for a couple of hours working out how many times, we could sing ‘Don’t worry be happy’ until our next destination! Even now when I hear the song I think about wonderful days, touring the New Zealand countryside singing ‘Don’t Worry be Happy’. Now my faith has matured more, I find the song reminds me to cast all my cares on God ‘To worry about nothing, rather with prayer and petition cast all my cares on Christ’

    - All the best for moving house. Very exciting times :-)
