A.R.T.S – Simple Formula for Teaching Bible Literacy

I got this little gem from The Mission of Motherhood by Sally Clarkson on reading the bible with your children:

A – Ask a simple question about the passage to spark interest before reading the story (example: Asking “what is the greatest treasure in the whole world that you would like to learn?” before reading the story about the pearl of great price).

R – Read the passage enthusiastically and with interest.

T – Talk about the passage.

S – Supplication – Close the time by praying together.

Simple and effective!  :)

This works really well! I have done this with our own children for a while now. When I forget to begin with a question, (sometimes I am a bit unsure of what to ask)then I notice that their attention level isn't quite as high. It takes a bit of foresight to be able to come up with great, thought-provoking questions every time (especially as they get older and they have heard the story for the umpteenth time!)but this is such a great way to have devotions!

  3. Great idea! I love the idea of the question to get and keep their attention while you are reading. I will be trying this out very soon! Thanks!
