Our Homeschool Room

Oh wait, that’s our living room.

Yep, we do much of our home educating on those comfy couches!  We may move to the dining room table for some writing and crafts, but the living room is the center of it all. I realize there are no pictures on our walls, we’re working on that! We just painted and have yet to fill those blank canvases with life!

We do actually have another school room…our back yard. There’s a lot of learning that goes on there, you know, like cooking mud pies in our mud pie kitchen…

Scrumptious! (Idea found here)

I admit it.  I would love to have an official homeschool room, but you know what, this is where we are and what we have…and I’d say we are pretty blessed just to have the opportunity to teach our children as I stay home.  We have so much to be thankful for.

Okay, now make me covet (kidding!), do you have a homeschool room?

What do you think? This would be a fine addition to any school room, wouldn’t you say? ;)

  1. That looks an awful lot like our homeschool room! We love reading and listening in our comfy chairs and sofa. Especially, in the winter in front of the fireplace! When it is time for writing we move to the kitchen table.

  2. Crystal says:

Our homeschool room is our kitchen! I'd love a special room but we have what we have, too! And, I'm okay with that!!

In our new house, we'll have a room designated for play/school/guests, so I'm planning to have our family computer and our school cabinet in that room. We'll probably do school throughout the house, though, including having quiet time baskets in each bedroom for our afternoon quiet times.

We use the living room and kitchen too! :)

Oh good- we're not the only family around without a super fancy homeschool room~ I do have a nice little corner for school stuff though! :)

  11. Leah says:

We do have a room – actually a whole house for school :) When we moved to remote Northern Montana for my husband's job…my in-laws bought a home for us to rent from them until we could buy it from them…anyway, it has a one-bedroom guest house in the back. That is my in-laws house when they come to visit…but in the meantime we use it for school – which is such a blessing because my husband works rotating shifts and is often sleeping during the day. We escape to the "schoolhouse" for lessons and play. It even has a small kitchen so we can eat or do science projects there. Do not covet though – it is one more place to keep clean and boy does that place take a beating!

While I am thinking of my in-laws, will ya'll please pray for my mother-in-law, Barbara…my in-laws were in a plane crash about 3 weeks ago and she is still in a coma. She loves the Lord with all her heart and is such an important part of our family. Not to be selfish – but we really want her back! Thank you,

    Leah

Yes, we are all blessed in this country. Our formal dining room has never been used for that purpose. It's our school room though our living room and kitchen usually serve the purpose nicely. My youngest is in third grade and is easily distracted so I'm cleaning out the room once more. I took before pictures, but I don't think I'm brave enough to post them. It's that bad!

I am with Katie! I also have been racking my brain, trying to figure out how to create a room! We have a nice open living room, a kitchen and a play room… That's all I need!

  15. Brandi says:

I have been home schooling for over 6 years and have never had a home school room. In the beginning it really bothered me, and I got jealous of other friends who were able to have one. I can honestly say now – I am okay without a specified school room. It would just be one more room to have to clean!! Plus, it would just be too difficult to teach all my kids at once since they are so spread out gradewise. We start out in our living room where we have Bible, read-alouds etc. and then move to the kitchen. My 6th grader does most of his school in his room or in the computer room. I do wish my boys had their own rooms, so they could each have someplace totally quiet in which to go, but we manage. Beautiful colors by the way ~ mine are similar. :)

Sarah Mae, those are perfect schoolrooms! We started out with an official one years ago, but found that the living room, the front yard, the kitchen table, the deck, and my bedroom worked best for us. Some of our best memories are reading aloud and laughing hysterically on my bed. The schoolroom was great for storage, but we rarely learned in there.

  18. Christy says:

I am just starting to homeschool my oldest (he's going into first grade) this year. We're very excited. You're cozy classroom looks alot like what we'll be doing. It's an encouragement (and learning experience) to see other homeschooling moms and how you work. Thanks!

  19. tammy says:

I love your homeschool room. Comfy, cozy, warm and inviting. What a precious place to learn and have a *living*life experiences. Cuddle with those precious ones, time flies. My oldest is 20 and it seems like yesterday we were all together on our couch reading aloud together. Sieze the day for God's glory and the furtherance of His work with these precious ones He has given you.

  20. We had an official school room for several years, which I was so excited to finally have… then I realized homeschooling works better in the home not a classroom (for us at least) so we took apart the school room made it into a cozy den and now we school throughout the house…. the kitchen table, the living room couches, the floor, the patio…. you get the idea. School is going so much smoother now that we did away with our official school room. Oh, and I love your living room paint color!

I do have a homeschool room! It's a bedroom, converted to an office. I'm painting it on Saturday, and hanging up some border. I'm hoping it will be simple, but inviting. :)

  22. Sarah says:

We just got a real school room for the first time in April. Although I love having that space, we homeschooled for many years without one just fine.

Amber – Moravian Sky :) I think we got it at the Home Depot.

  24. Amber says:

    Thanks so much..I love it!

  25. Dee says:

Don't feel bad for not having a "real" school room. We actually have the space for one. I set it up & then we never used it. The living room is just so much more comfortable and cozy. Somehow that motivates us to accomplish more. Being in the "school room" just made us want to hurry up and get out. So, I took the school room down & now we are in the living room every day and loving it.

  26. gina says:

When the girls were younger and we were unschooling, I joked it should be called kitchen-centric learning. SO much of our learning took place there while we baked, crafted, experimented, created, built, etc.

Now doing the virtual K12 program with older children – we have found that moving the girls desks down into my office/guest room has worked out very nicely.

Of course we are still on the road alot – CARschooling. :)

  28. a simple twist of faith says:

We started home schooling last fall, first I tried to set up a table in the playroom, but we naturally moved to the dining table for math and science, and the sofa for reading, history, faith formation and storytime. When the weather permits, we also use our patio and backyard. Yesterday, we drove to Colonial Williamsburg for Home Schooler week, what a wonderful opporunity that was!

  29. Shannon says:

We have a school room but we almost never stay in there. It is too crowded. We usually end up on the living room couch and dining room table. :) Your house is beautiful just the way it is.

  30. Allie says:

My oldest is only two, and we are in the process of moving from our two-bedroom condo into a 5-bedroom house, so I'm not quite at the point where I'm "officially" homeschooling yet. However, I am planning out what my homeschool room will be, and I have decided to get a small, cozy couch to have in there. I think it should feel like a mini living room, but with a chalk board and a long desk for getting our work done:)

  31. I need to to thank you for this great read!! I definitely enjoyed every bit of it. I’ve got you saved as a favorite to look at new stuff you post…
