12 New Things

If you are new here but want to journey along, won’t you subscribe to Like a Warm Cup of Coffee so we can walk alongside one another as we learn 12 new things? (It’s free!)

My 12 New Things

A Journey in Mastering New Skills!

(Read (in)courage today if you want to know the “why” behind 12 New Things)

August – Homemade bread, sans bread machine. Completed. (I’ll post results on the last Thursday of this month)

September – Learn how to change a tire

October - Make homemade candles

November – Read Stepping Heavenward

December – Make two Christmas dresses for my girls (I’ve only ever made one at a time, never two dresses at once)

January – Learn how to quilt (something simple)

February – Learn how to cross stitch

March – Style my hair for 30 days straight and learn new ways of styling it (yes, this is a new skill. Ahem)

April – Write the kids book that has been lurking in my mind…

May - Learn canning  (not the dance, the art of preserving food :)

June – Learn how to French braid my daughters hair…and make it look nice!

July – Learn how to play piano (hey babe, can we get a piano? How about a keyboard? ;)

Each month I’ll be posting my results of learning the above things – if you join in each month you can post your own results and link it up here. We’ll link up on the last Thursday of each month.

Wanna join in? Grab the button (save image as and link to this post) and link-up your 12 Things list post! (link it back here so others can participate!) We can do this friends – let’s learn new skills together! (If you’re on Twitter, I’m using #12newthings for all things…12 Things!)

What a great idea! There have been a number of things rolling around in my head the past few months or so, maybe this challange will help me get started on some of them.

  5. Teddi says:

I love this idea! I am totally in!

  6. Paula Tarrant-Rivers says:

Wow! What an opportunity with "no pressure" to perform. After three marriages, four children and forced retirement, I am at a place of being able to exhale! The first step I'll take will be to look back over my journey to re-capture my dreams.

SEPTEMBER: My first step is to re-gain the discipline to make time for prayer and reverence everyday.

OCTOBER: Re-learn the art of making candy apples

    NOVEMBER: Exercise everyday

    DECEMBER: Make cakes from scratch

    JANUARY: Desk top publishing

  7. Melissa says:

I LOVE this idea, but my problem is sticking with ONE thing. I am always learning new things and love the variety and mental stimulation it gives. But I really need to stick to one thing for 12 months and go deeper with it. Maybe I should start a carnival for that ; ) But I'll be watching and cheering ya'll on. I love seeing your list.

  8. Lori says:

Count me in! Haven't picked all 12 yet but working on the list. Making apple pie (because I have an apple tree)and changing a tire are all I have so far.

  9. Cyndi says:

I LOVE this idea!! Now to sit down and make a list. hmmmmmm

  10. What a fun idea! I'm definitely going to be doing this one :D Hmmmm…gonna have to give this some thought!

  11. Michelle says:

This sounds like SOO MUCH FUN! No commitment yet, as I like to pray and seek God's will for my plans, but I will be thinking about it!

I think your list looks exciting, but the hairstyle one?! Yes, it IS a skill, but why mess with elegance?!

    • Sarah Mae says:

Michelle- HA! Elegance – you are too much (and too sweet!). I have some SERIOUS Muffaso (have you seen the Lion King?!) going on! I have to tame that beast or it is UGLY!

  12. Rachel says:

As far as learning the piano- me too! We are considering purchasing Piano Wizard for our girls (and myself)- it's very cool.

Also, if I could recommend the book that has helped me learn to quilt- it's called Quilts!Quilts!Quilts! by: Daina McClun and Laura Nownes… it's an amazing resource- you can get used copies!

Great idea- we all could learn something new! :)

Thanks for the comment Sarah! I hear you on being behind on scrapbooks! Do you make paper or digital scrapbooks? I've been finding lately that digital is a lot faster for me!

Meg – paper, but maybe I'll have to submit to digital…

  14. maria says:

This is a challenge I need to take on! I have been putting off some things I wanted to do for sometime but now…I am inspired…learning to sew is the first thing! I would love to win a planner!!

  15. Brandi says:

What an inspirational list!! I'd love to know how to quilt, too. A friend of mine took all of my kids' baby clothes and sewed a blanket for me — all it needs now is that quilt stitching. I don't even know what it's called!! Home schooling, though, takes up so much time. And I write in my spare time, too. I love that you want to write a children's book. I have written a few, and am in the process of submitting. I hope I can be a "published author" someday. :)

  16. Heathahlee says:

I won't commit to learning something new every month, aside from continuing to learn how to care for my Mom, who came to live with me last month. She has cancer and what could be the beginning stages of dementia, so it will be a learning experience, indeed! I guess I could say I want to learn the fruits of the Spirit…patience especially! : )

Good luck everyone on reaching their goals! Sarah Mae, you have inspired many!

Thanks for the inspiration. It was actually fun coming up with the different specific things that I would like to accomplish for the next year. Somethings I have been putting off. You know, "it just kinda seems too difficult." Some of the things I would like to squeeze into our winter months here. It is nice and cozy, the summer rush of gardening and preparation for winter is over and you can take a deep breathe and work on fun project stuff. I will keep you posted.

I posted my list of 12 New Things, and I have to admit, it's a little intimidating!

I hope your breadmaking goes well, I intend to use it to teach myself :)

Stepping Heavenward is wonderful, and my 13 yr old daughter LOVES it too!

*AND* I sooo know what you mean about the hair, I call mine "medusa", my sister loving refers to it as "bat wings"…Once Upon A Time, my hair was nice…after Baby #4, it turned on me. I use gel to tidy/smooth it, side part it, neatly pull it into a ponytail, (fix my bat wings again), and spray…EVERY.SINGLE.DAY!!! …So, needless to say, I'm looking forward to your new hairstyles too!
