Do You Believe the Scriptures are Sufficient?
The most important and basic thing for a Christian to do is to decide whether or not they believe the scriptures are inerrant (incapable of error) and sufficient (enough).
Why?
Because if we believe the above to be true, then the scriptures will be our standard for evaluating everything in life.
“The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether.
1They are more desirable than gold, yes, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them Your servant is warned;
In keeping them there is great reward.” Psalm 19:7-11
“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (bold and italicize mine) 2 Timothy 3:16,17
We know from the scriptures that the scriptures are enough. They are without error, and they are breathed of God – they are the authority of God.
Knowing where we stand on the authority of scripture is going to be key in how we answer the questions of life. If you and I trust the scriptures…if we trust God…we can be secure and safe in His wisdom for us.

Yes! One of my favorite quotes is, "Belief determines behavior." by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. This is always a good litmus test for me when my behavior is not lining up with the Word of God.

YES! I've been reading so many posts lately about people who are doubting that the Bible is pertinent to our time or interpreting it based on what they WANT it to say rather than what it really says. Thank you for this encouragement tonight.

YES! I don't want to take away or add anything to the Bible. Solo scriptura:)
One thing that always irritates me is when someone says they are doing something that they think God is okay with, like living with their boy/girlfriend, or homosexuality, etc. They say that they are good with God, yet I know based on scripture that God will never contradict his Word. So if I am living in a manner that goes against the Word then I know that I am also going against my Lord. I hope that makes sense:)
Its so sad when people think that the Bible is simple a "rule book" or "a history book". I love what Mark Driscoll says, the Bible isn't about what happened, its about what ALWAYS happens! Its just as pertinent now to our culture and time as it was then.
Great post! Thanks for sharing, perfect for me to read this morning:)

You know I do! And I will preach this truth till I go to the grave!!!
I was just speaking with someone who does not beleive this and they asked me to prove it. I have many evidences from prophecy to testimonies of lives changed but I told them – ultimately – No amount of proofs can convince someone to believe. At the end of the day, it takes faith to believe this!
I pray that as we spread the truth of God's word across blogland, that some will place their faith in the truth of God's word!

An excellent reminder!
It is so wonderful that God saw fit to give us His word. We don't have to wonder about what He thinks, or what He is like. He has told us. He does not lie AND He keeps His promises. It sure is nice to be able to rely on Him.
This is why I truly feel dreadful when I neglect to read His word. We need the word to feed us. We need it to build us up and show us the way. It is our foundation.

Amen!! I am no Bible expert, but I think it is so sad when professing Christians (not including new believers) don't know what their Bibles say. It is so important to me to instill in my children the desire to take every thought captive and to measure everything they do by the standard of the Bible.

Yikes! What a timely post! And a timely discussion about women's roles and being a homemaker. I know that God has seriously led me to your blog for a reason.
Amen! Amen! It is so sad to see so many fall away from this blessed truth. I believe with all my heart the Word is Sufficient it is living it with my actions every moment I need help with!
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
Praise the Lord for His Word and love that He would give us all we need for life and godliness!

Yes, absolutely it's important to make this decision about scripture. When we do not claim the authority of scripture it is easy to become double minded or follow any new teaching which "feels" right.

Two weeks ago I did a weeklong study about WHY we should study the Word. Loved it! Shared a bit about it on my blog; posted verses, a video clip, etc.
We must know the Word, what we believe, and why we believe it! So true!
I agree with you 100%. We must base our decisions on the Bible, not what the world tries to tell us. Thank-you for your blog.I just found you.
