Holy Work

February 22nd, 2010

Oh, Mothers of young children, I bow before you in reverence.  Your work is most holy.  You are fashioning the destinies of immortal souls.  The powers folded up in the little ones that you hushed to sleep in your bosoms last night, are powers that shall exist forever.  You are preparing them for their immortal destiny and influence.  Be faithful.  Take up your sacred burden reverently.  Be sure that your life is sweet and clean.

What beautiful words! “Fashioning the destinies of immortal souls”… WOW!

  2. Brenna says:

I love this quote and am wondering which book (if any) it came from. I read his book “Homemaking” and just loved it. Please let me know if you’ve read it. No one I know has, and I’d love to discuss it with someone. xo

  3. Bethany says:

Thank you for always sharing encouraging words for us fellow SAHMs. In our society, there is a lack of validation for what we are choosing to do, and I am always inspired and encouraged when I read your blog, to continue loving on and taking care of my baby girl and reassured that staying home with her is not a waste, but the highest calling a mother could have.

  4. Richella says:

You know, children are young even when they’re too old for us to hush to sleep in our bosoms. They need us even when their ages are in the double digits, even when they’re taller than we are, even when they can drive themselves to school. And they are especially observant of whether our lives are sweet and clean.

    Mothering is holy work, indeed.

  7. Larie says:

“Sacred burden,” wow, I appreciate that the author did not attempt to say motherhood is a bed of roses. It’s a burden sometimes, yes, but a sacred burden…POWERFUL!

Brenna, I don’t know! I got it from June’s site (A Wise Woman Builds Her Home). :)

  9. Tiffany says:

Thank you for these powerful words. When the day is long and the children have been less than sweet, I take comfort in knowing that God has entrusted their lives with me. I love the inspiration I get from your blog.

    Brenna,

I have read Homemaking as well and wish that EVERYONE would!!!!! It is so wonderful and full of masterfully phrased encouragement. Miller is an excellent writer and from what I have heard, his life was one of the untmost integrity and godliness.

By the way, Homemaking was republished under the title “The Family.” I am hoping that the new title and cover art will lead more people to read it.

  11. stacey robinette says:

I love this picture, where did you find it, I’d love a poster size of it in my foyer.

Love what Richella said…..no matter how old we get we will always be someones baby…… even when we are in the double digits.

I find the older I get the more I need my Mama.

  12. SarahMae says:

Stacey – I don’t know – I swiped it from June at A Wise Woman Builds Her Home! :)

  13. Stacie says:

Well, I certianly don’t want you bowing in reverence to me, but I do not mind people understanding what sacrifice and work it is to have little ones. They are truly blessings, though.

  14. JoAnn Hallum says:

Thank you for such a lovely post. It can sometimes be a battle to be the mother I need to be. This was encouraging.
