You Are My Sunshine…

That’s my song, my favorite childhood song; my dad used to sing it to me.

Now I sing it to my babes, but I replace “sunshine” with their names.

Do you have a favorite childhood song?  Do your kiddos?

Would you tell me for free stuff?

Tommy Nelson, super-cool-Jesus-kiddo-stuff, has something fun up their sleeve this holiday season and they want you to be a part of it…

“One of our favorite things about kids is there lack of any inhibition whatsoever – especially when it comes to singing. Little ones will belt out their favorite song, or whatever pops into their head, whenever they feel it coming on. They have little regard for tone or pitch, but throw their whole hearts into every note! In honor of their fearless vocal stylings, Tommy Nelson is kicking off the Christmas Countdown with a week of singing.”

What’s up for grabs this week?

Each day this week Tommy Nelson is giving away a different Bible story and song book from the Grammy award-winning Stephen Elkins.  On Friday they are giving away a prize pack with an iPod and an Elkins full library!!!

    I don't know why, but I always loved "Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah…" I sang it all the time!

    My girls love it when I sing "My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean" – only I substitute their names for "Bonnie". I began singing it to them after my 2nd one was born and it would get both of them to sleep at the same time. It's my miracle song. lol

  6. Michaele says:

    My curly-haired, baby girl Sydney would sing the "You are so beautiful to me…can't you see?" We sang this to her everyday, especially her daddy, so even though we were singing about HER, she wanted to sing it about OTHER people too! She is still a generous, kind spirit at age 16!

  17. Debi Rogers says:

    "You are my Sunshine" is probably my favorite to sing to my kids and now, my granddaughter. My Dad used to sing a country song to us – may have been called "That's How Much I Love You, Baby". I always loved that. My granddaughter's favorite is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", and believe it or not, "Amazing Grace". We also sing songs together that I've written.

    I used to love listening to the Music Machine record. We played it all the time and my mom always sang the "Have Patience" song to us. I still sing that to my kids today and they're teenagers (although there is a lot of eye-rolling involved when I sing it now!)

  23. Lisa says:

    I'm also a Twitter follower!

  24. Sidnie says:

    Had to come back a second time and tell you that we also sing The Doxology. When my hubby was deployed, and I was alone in Germany with 2 little ones, I would sing it as I paced the floor with a newborn in the middle of the night, or just when I'd had a crazy day… Brings comfort and peace to a long day…

    "Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
    Praise Him, all creatures here below;
    Praise Him above, ye Heavenly Host;
    Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen."
    .-= Sidnie´s last blog post … Talking with Austin… =-.

  25. Melissa Cummings says:

    Definitely Brahm's Lullaby — you all know that tune, right? Okay, well, my mama always tucked me in at night (from the very earliest I can remember) and sang it to me with her very own words: "Lullaby and goodnight, go to sleep my Melissa, see you in the morning time, when the sun comes back up! But for now, go to sleep, see you in the morning; but for now, go to sleep, my Melissa Joy."
    Yep. My mother. The lyricist. :)
    It's still my favorite song. And I love that my son's baby toys all seem to play it. :)

    One memorable song which comes to mind is 'Don't Worry Be happy'. When visiting my Aunty in New Zealand one year she gave us a book with pictures to illustrate each verse of the song. the book also came with a CD. The Cd however only had the one song on it! So we had heaps of fun for a couple of hours working out how many times, we could sing 'Don't worry be happy' until our next destination! Even now when I hear the song I think about wonderful days, touring the New Zealand countryside singing 'Don't Worry be Happy'. Now my faith has matured more, I find the song reminds me to cast all my cares on God 'To worry about nothing, rather with prayer and petition cast all my cares on Christ'

    - All the best for moving house. Very exciting times :-)

  43. Dawna Larsson says:

    When my kids were little I always sang "Hush little baby don't say a word, papa's going to buy you a mocking bird.". Not sure of the title but that is the first line.
