Do I Really Think Family Worship is a Waste of Time?
November 8th, 2009
If you want to know where I’m coming from calling family worship a “royal waste of time,” then check out ‘The Joy of Family Worship‘ by R.C. Sproul Jr. It completely changed my perspective of family worship.
And yes, we do worship together as a family…as an end, not a means. :)

We do not have “family worship” … rather we live a lifestyle of worship in which the goal is a seamless blend of sacred and secular … much the way Christ lived. While we do set aside time for prayer and Bible study and to encourage our daughter in her spiritual growth … I choose to believe that living out Deuteronomy 6 is more about an ongoing dialog and way of life than “family devotions.” I have no particular issue with those who do have “family worship” … it’s just that for us, God has never led us there … instead we’ve been led to serve meals at the homeless shelter, participate in Walk for Life for our crisis pregnancy center, pray for people as we pass by their homes, celebrate the beauty of sunrises and sunsets, and keep the conversation ongoing about how God is at work in, through, and around us.
I have not read the book you mentioned. But I wanted to share my thoughts.

Great resource Sarah Mae! We enjoy when we are able to have family worship! Our Pastor was helpful when he told us that family worship can look different for each family and does not have to be a “big” thing that you can’t stay committed to – better to even set a small goal of just reading a few Bible verses aloud each day. We do read a Psalm or some Bible verses aloud before our meals. Since our evenings often get too late to have a formal family worship time, before dinner we go over 3 catechism questions, read a few Bible verses, sing a song and pray! It only takes a few minutes and it’s such a nice way to thank Him for the blessings of the day.

We have started “Family Worhip” time to do ABC’s Journey through Scriptures. My husband and I pick out the verses and then we prepare a lesson for our girls. It has been a great experience so far.
