Titus 2:3-5 – Uncovering the Beauty

October 26th, 2009

Camellia

I adore Titus 2:3-5 because it succinctly tells me how I am to live as a woman, and why.  It is a beautiful thing to be a woman when we live out of who we are, as equal to men, but with great and honoring roles that bring glory to God.  It is a thrilling, albeit hard, journey to follow the path of wisdom womanhood, but I grasp it with all of my being and hope to ignite a desire for biblical womanhood in your heart as well.

I realize many studies have probably been done on this passage, so…

I hope to unfold it with freshness.  The great thing is, I know you’ll help me with your comments and questions (this is a journey together, right?).

To begin this series, let’s start with a simple outline of Titus 2:3-5:

Who are the young women to be taught by?

  • Older women who are…
  • Reverent in behavior
  • Not malicious gossips
  • Not enslaved to much wine
  • Teaching what is good

What are young women to be taught/how are young women to live?

  • Love their husbands
  • Love their children
  • Be Sensible
  • Pure
  • Workers at home
  • Kind
  • Subject to their own husbands

Why do we live this way?

  • So that the word of God will not be dishonored

As we explore this rich passage together, let’s start tomorrow by understanding the person and role of the older woman.

I hope you’ll join me in uncovering the beauty.

  3. Yeah, I’ve been wanting to study Titus, specifically Titus 2 & this gives me the push I needed! Excited to spur one another on!!!

  4. Larie says:

I’ll be here! I like the way you have set it up so far with this outline. The way you have broken it down with the question, it seems clearer that way or something.

Hey, do you mind if I print the series out? It’s just so that I can write notes and not have to sit in front of the computer to read it. I’ll be able to refer back to it at anytime!

If not, I totally understand, but I wanted to ask your permission.

    smooches,

  8. Anna says:

I’m so looking forward to this study! It’s hard sometimes to keep a Biblical perspective on femininity and what it means to be a woman of God. Our culture today is pretty aggressively opposed to most Biblical teachings on this subject, so I’m thrilled to follow along as we uncover what the Word says! Thanks so much!

I’m also looking forward to this time together… thanks!
It’s been awhile that I’ve taken a deeper look at these verses,(our church group -Sovereign Grace Ministries- has done a series or two on this subject)for myself.

I often wonder when the tide will turn and I will be that older woman(right now there is still always someone older then me, who I can glean from)but, … I want to be ready…

So interesting! I was just this morning talking to my dh about how the Bible tells us women specifically how to act. We were talking about the latest man scandal and how it affects the man’s family. I mentioned to him that it might not be the whole story. Not that the man’s adultery is okay by any means but that if the wife/mother is not walking in God’s ways than it has affect on their relationship and can contribute to these bad choices. Looking forward to following along in your study. Blessings!

  14. I’m in a place now where I have people both looking up to me and a desire to look up to others. God has strategically placed these people in my life and I’m so thankful for all of them. But I look around the church today and I don’t see a lot of women who are taking the time to “be” this Scripture. We’re all so busy pursuing (sometimes) things other than what these verses outline and we’re quick to dismiss them or think someone else will do it. I hope you’ll give us a call to rise up in the days ahead. Looking forward to the challenge :-)

  15. Love this S, can’t wait to read more!

  16. I love this passage in Titus. Uncovering the beauty of “biblical womanhood” is always a wonderful journey in my opinion.

Here is a question for you. What constitutes an older woman? Does an older woman have to be a grandmother, or could it also be someone like me…middle-aged?

I look forward to following this study.

  18. Traci says:

    Hey Sarah,

Would you be able to touch on what “older women” means? Does this mean older in the faith, older in age, or both?

I teach a ladies bible study at church and I am 29 years old. No one else was stepping up to teach, and I truly believe that God called me to do this, for this time.

    What are your thoughts?

  24. Debbie says:

As an older woman of 56, I look forward to this too. Sometimes when I look in the mirror, I’m surprised because I still feel the same inside as I did when I was in my twenties and thirties. But things do change on the outside.

However, I believe I’ve grown more in my relationship with Christ as I’ve gotten a bit older. I want the beauty to come from inside and focus less on the exterior. BTW, that’s what we all say once we pass 50. LOL.

But seriously, I have had older women friends who have been mentors for me and I love to spend time with younger women who love the Lord. I think it’s great that we can all learn from one another.

  26. Allie Z says:

Ok, just yesterday before I left for work, my hubby said “Allie, I can see that you are happiest in the home, taking care of the family and being my support while I go out into the world to make a living to take care of the family. I heard you say that it’s your desire to stay home but I didn’t think it was reality. I can SEE it’s your desire, that it’s where you should be, and we’ll talk more about you staying home soon.” Wow, what does a woman say to that? I’ve worked full time outside of the house for 10 years (yep, started at 17 to support my daughter as a single mom). I just looked up at him, smiled, and told him that striving to be a Titus 2 woman is a passion of mine, a Christ filled desire.

    Perfect timing… :)

    Allie
