What My Day Looks Like

August 12th, 2009

schedule

Sometimes my brain just doesn’t want to cooperate.  It is on these brain funk days that I post something completely random.  Today is one of those days.

Therefore

if any of you have an inkling of curiosity about what my sunup to sundown looks like, today is your *lucky* day.

My (ideal and striving towards) day:

5am – Wake, Get dressed, make my man’s lunch, prepare for day mentally, spend time in the Word, drink large mug of glorious coffee

7am – Kiddos up, they listen to bible on CD and color/write while I make yummy breakfast, we eat and then I read bible story, sing a hymn/Christian song, pray

7:30am – Clean up kitchen, put load of laundry in, train kiddos in chores (make bed, pick-up toys/books in bedroom, wipe down table, unload/load dishwasher) while listening to classical music or praise

8am - Reading time, free play, video, craft, homeschooling (very simple), cleaning, errands, play dates, teachable moments, giggles, hugs, boo boo kisses, and “mom, look what I did/can do!” exaltations

11:15am – Pick-up toys/books, make lunch

11:30am – Lunch, clean-up after, reading

12pm - Naps (Thank you Jesus that you made little’s need naps!)

12-2pm – Me – Clean, blog, banking (bleck)

2-4pm – Snack, free play, craft, prepare for dinner, teachable moments, giggles, hugs, boo boo kisses, and “mom, look what I did/can do!” exaltations

4:30pm – Dinner (yes, we’re weird and eat early)

5pm - Family time/play, baths, family worship (my man reads out of a devotion for little, we read the scripture, talk about it briefly, and pray)

6:30 – Bedtime for son and baby, three year old spends time with daddy

7:30pm – three year old to bed, blog, hang with the hubs

10pm – Beautiful sleep

Your kids go to bed at 6:30 and 7:30!!! Wow. I guess I vaguely remember those days. Who am I kidding. My kids never went to bed at 6:30. They used to go to bed at 8:00. This summer we’ve been especially slack about bedtimes and no one has been in bed before 9. (Even the almost 3 year old.) But her naptime isn’t until 2 and she doesn’t usually fall asleep until closer to 4.

I think I had a Google reader problem because I just realized that I wasn’t getting your feed!?!?! A few of my subscriptions just disappeared a few weeks ago and I never realized it! How sad… now I have a lot of catching up to do!

We’ve been working on a more structured schedule the past few weeks. I’ll be starting homeschooling our preschooler 2-3 days a week starting next week so I know that I want to have a better schedule set. Getting to bed earlier and getting up earlier have been my struggle lately. I love my early morning quite times and really need to get back to them! Now that our youngest is sleeping through the night I’ll have a chance to get back to rising early!

One of the BEST things I did this last year was relegate ALL travel during the day to one weekday a week. No more days mushed up by multiple runs to somewhere. Friday is our day here and all errands, workshops, extras have to go there..or we don’t. Homeschool group activities are limited to only Thursday afternoons during the fall (12-4) and often only 2 times a month. We simply need more time with them at home, so we’re saying “no” alot to things that interrupt family time…friends may join us, but ours are at home.

I love your schedule. I’m still working on working our routine into a consistent time schedule, and am getting close… just in time for a new school year and completely new schedule!!! Since I work in special education, my schedule varies depending on whether it’s school year or break/vacation. I am listening to the “…24 Hours” CD you recommended. I am CONFIDENT it will help me resist panic & frustration with afternoons/evenings during the school year.

My kids go to bed a 7:00 too! I love it, since it gives me time to finish things up at night.

BUT OH MY GOSH, SARAH MAE! HOW DO YOU GET OUT OF BED BEFORE 6am? I’M STRUGGLING TO GET UP BY 7, despite the suspicion that my days would be much more calm and happy if I got up earlier.

  17. Denise says:

Oh I wish I had a schedule of sorts! The only thing I feel is scheduled in my life are my work hours–they are fairly consistent. My husband and I recently got married, and at the moment he is working overnight shifts while I work early mornings into early afternoons (He gets out of work when I go into work– eek!). Right now our schedule changes daily, and it’s difficult to schedule anything because our bodies and minds are on different schedules. I’m praying that the Lord provides a job for my husband where we are able to see each other more and is more consistent with its scheduling. It is such a blessing that you are able to train up your children through homeschooling and worship daily as a family. It looks like you have a great schedule to work with!

4:30 sounds like a heavenly dinner time to me! Some days I quite fancy your three-year-old’s bedtime, too.

Today, my day was intended to start at 5:30AM, but for some reason the alarm clock chose 4:50 and I was up and showered before I realized it was still awfully dark outside!

  28. OH How I loved looking at your day and others as well. I am getting ready to start our formal days of homeschooling and I have been all about making my schedule And so now lets see how each moment works out. Goal one is working on keeping my heart right with God, gentle and joyful. I know that your fabulous ideas on memorizing God’s word will add peace to the day and even give gentleness to my heart so we can have wonderful moments in my Goal oriented schedule.

My day is crazy from start to finish

    6:55 alarm
7:15 jump out of bed, dress hurriedly, take my vitamins, throw on some makeup, and run out the door to morning prayer meeting
8:00 arrive at morning prayer meeting and greet the believers (then we sing for a while, pray, hug and leave)
8:45 get home and make brunch
9:30 brunch clean-up followed by music practice for the kiddos as well as “morning chores”. I usually do laundry and other misc clean-up at this time.
    11:00 free time
12:00 lunch followed by a bit of clean-up
1-4 free time/nap time. I usually check email, blog, read, language study, and do more laundry.
    5:00 supper and another clean-up
    6:00 family time
    8:00 bedtime for the kiddos
8-? personal devotions, time with my Love, read, fall asleep

This schedule will change drastically when we start up homeschool in mid-September.

Also, this schedule does not reflect a typical day of canning or gardening. Those days are especially crazy!

I have just recently happened upon your blog through Simplemom and I love it! This schedule post is very timely as it is a goal I am working on right now. It is very helpful to see other mom’s schedules as I often feel like I don’t know where to begin – so I don’t begin at all… This helps incredibly! I was wondering what Bible CD’s you have your kids listen to? I love that idea rather than having the tv on in the background! Thanks for sharing your life with us!

  31. Sarah Mae – I am so impressed with your schedule and I am laughing at what your Dad said!! Everybody’s schedules seem great. I do think they work better when kiddos are younger. Now, if I try to do a specific schedule – things happen daily to throw it off (school calls and needs something, hubby wants an errand run, friend has emergency, etc.) I seem to work better with just assigning myself tasks for the day. I should assign times for meals at least to keep things on track.

One of the things that is hard for me is that we eat late since we want to eat together – 7pm at the earliest after hubby gets home from work. And then my son doesn’t usually go to bed until 10pm. Am trying to think of some new ways this school year to change it a bit.

    Thanks for sharing!
