A Little Girl Modesty Tip
Moms, I have a wee little tip for you regarding your sweet little girls and modesty.
Put shorts under their skirts and dresses.
Such a simple way to protect their little heiny’s from random eyes.
Little girls like to run and jump and roll on the floor, and their cute little dresses come right on up. Sometimes, in their innocence, they hold up their dresses/skirts for all the world to see.
But you don’t want the world to see, right?
So grab some shorts and make it a habit. It just might stick with them.
:)
I use biker type shorts that are tighter because loose shorts don’t cover well at all.

I love this! My daughter went to a private school for the past 3 years that required this. I thought it so insane at first- and she found it so annoying- but it has been the best habit. Now that she's homeschooled and almost 8 she will STILL wear shorts under dresses :) Great tip!

Love it! I used to do that when I was little, too. Great advice!

I completely agree! We have been practicing this modestly for some time. My little ones absolutely love to wear dresses just as much as they absolutely love to do cartwheels and spin around. They never complain either which is a blessing!
This is so funny because my sister-in-law (who, might I add, has five older brothers) STILL wears shorts under her skirts and dresses to this day! It just might stick… :)

I do this with both of my girls as well. They love to wear dresses and skirts, and we don't leave home without the shorts too!

yeah i totally agree! i work at a Christian daycare and we require this for our little girls! :)
This has been something that I got into the habit of doing when my little girl was a tiny baby. Now at 2 1/2 I am so glad she is used to wearing shorts or at least a diaper cover. I wish more moms would do this.

Great post! My darling daughter always seems to have her dairy aire hanging out. Such a simple solution – a little miffed that I didn't think of that sooner! Thanks!

It does stick…my girls are 8,10 and 12 and they can't wear a skirt or dress without a pair of leggings or bike shorts underneath. They say they feel naked if they don't. I always ask myself what I want this to look like in a few years when I make a decision about what the girls wear or do. That tends to help me make wise choices because I don't want to be in a position of backtracking later.

I agree!! The Christian school we attend asks (I don't think it's required, but I have a boy so I don't know for sure) that all elementary girls wear shorts under their required skirts/dresses, especially on PE days. Most of the girls I know at church have shorts on under their dresses. And the fact that I know that for certain tells you something about how often little girls skirts don't stay in place! :)

As the mom of a little girl who refuses to wear anything but dresses, I wholeheartedly agree with your concerns and sentiments. We stocked up on $3.99 stretchy cotton shorts at Target. We trained our little Cupcake that putting shorts on is just another part of getting dressed, like putting on her socks.
Hi Sarah! It's been ages since I last visited you. Beach is taking up all my computer time!! I love your new website!
This is a very good and practical idea. And so easy to carry out. Thanks.
Hi Sarah!! What kind of shorts would you suggest? I have a daughter and am very aware of this kind of thing too!

I used to make bloomers for my girls and we loved them. Now my oldest daughter is a fashion designer (modest but beautiful clothes!) and she still makes them but calls them "harem pants". They are silky and incredibly lovely and I would never want to be without them! It's definitely something that stuck with us.

Great advice!! I have twin four year old girls and they love to wear dresses, but I cringe when they sit in them with their legs wide open. I am trying diligently to teach them to sit like ladies, but in the meantime, I will be putting shorts or leggings under those dresses….thanks!

My girls (3 of them) wear knee length leggings under skirts and dresses. This is great because when a skirt is getting a bit on the short side it doesn't matter. And as my children grow like weeds anything to make clothes last a bit longer is good in my book! :-)
Amy (mother to Martha, Tilly and Evelyn.)
My daughter and I wear skirts and dresses pretty much all the time(except when just lounging around the house) and this is a must for little girls!! (and sometimes for us big girls too depending on what kind of skirt I have on or what we're doing!) We also do leggings or pants underneath when it gets cooler which helps with the modesty and adds warmth as well. They have some really cute outfits now that are mix and match so we just buy the matching pants and skirts and wear them together instead of seperate! Delancey's only 4 but I've taught her that it looks better when we're going out to have a skirt or dress on over the pants or shorts since they're fitted….and she loves it! I just hope she has a heart for being that modest as she grows up as well. :-)

Excellent tip! I had a friend in elementary school that took it a step further – she never wore a dress without PANTS under it! LOL I think that was just rebellion though, she was a bit of a tomboy. ;)
I love that you took time to post this very simple and thoughtful tip for young mothers. Especially in these days, you can't be too careful with your little ones!

Great tip.
My girls are 16 and 17 and I did that when they were little too.
So many times I see little girls rolling around on the floor flashing everyone.. My girls loved doing it too. It gave them the ability and the safety to have FUN…
Great tip!!

We have always done this with our girls but I also have 2 boys and I can tell you that I appreciate reading all the comments above from moms who take modesty seriously. My oldest son is 9 and we are teaching him to respect girls by turning away when he sees an immodest girl…or even a girl who unintentionally shows too much(on the play ground or in PE). As much as I would love all moms to take your suggetion, you don't have to go too far to see little girls who aren't being taught modesty. It's important for those of us with boys to teach them how to guard their eyes/hearts and how to respect those girls.

Oh yes, we do this often – and my oldest has a collection of skorts to wear so she can dress like "a princess" and still play when she wants to.

My youngest daughter loves skorts – skirt/shorts in one. I love them too…it immediately puts on the "shorts" under the skirt. Another thing we do, especially since she just shot up many inches, is the bend over test – she bends over, if I see anything it is too short….in the bag for charity.

Great idea! Now that my daughter doesn't have diaper covers, I wished I would of thought of this sooner. This is why we all need each other as moms…thanks for the great advice/idea! Love it!
Almost all the dresses my daughter has came with bloomers or we have a couple of bloomers that will work with other dresses. But I think it is also important to remember lenght when we are talking about modesty. Even in the little girls, I see a lot of too short dresses for my 5 year old and I am not just speaking about modesty.
And here's a tip for your older girls. Always wear a "safety shirt". Shirts these days can be and typically are provocative (tight, short, low-cut). Have your older daughters wear a tank top or other tight-fitting, longer shirt, under the regular shirt they are wearing. That way when they raise their arms up, or move around, their bellies or breasts won't show.

I've always thought it was so funny that when they are infants, every outfit comes WITH "bloomers" to go under them, but then when they hit the age of three, they don't. We always stock up on shorts this time of year to go under dresses and we are also LOVING the leggings, too! GREAT TIP!
Oh my goodness…you don't know how perfectly timed this post is!!! I've been so frustrated that all of Kaylin's birthday dresses (from 2 weeks ago!) have already shrunk UP in the wash. They were knee length and perfect, now barely cover her panties. And she LOVES wearing dresses. I was at a loss for what I was going to do in a couple of weeks when she begins pre-school and I can't be there to remind her to "pull her dress down, like a lady."
I'm going to dig through our hand-me-downs to see what shorts I can put under her dress RIGHT NOW. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I do this, too!!! In fact, my 6 yr old still insists on wearing shorts under any skirts or dresses that hem at her knees or higher.

I'm thinkin' my Granddaughters are going to need a suit of hardened steel armor. Either that, or I am personally going to "interview" each and every suitor that comes to call. And as you well know…"I don't mind going BACK to prison"!
As for Cade, he's gonna be big enough to defend himself AND his sisters.
Love ya Babe.
Great tip! I love the idea of bloomers… they are more vintage to me.

My mom used to sew little bloomers for me, and I plan on doing the same if God blesses me with daughters someday.
As a quick tip, especially for non-sewers, you can buy something called a skirty – basically bike shorts with lace. A nice, feminine option.

I agree Sarah. Our oldest daughter is so accustomed to this now that I do not have to remind her to do!

Great idea! I just had an incident with my almost 2 year old daughter at a basketball game. She had on a very cute dress but was active and climbing all over the bleachers. I don't even know how many times I said "Sit down and close your legs". The shorts/bloomers will become part of her dress outfits.
I have a little one who insists on wearing dresses EVERYDAY!! I love it and encourage her in her pursuit of femininity- however she is one who often ends up with her little feet over her head.
We have started buying her leggings in the winter to wear under her dresses and then once summer comes we simply cut off the leggings and they make great "shorts" to wear under her summer dresses. :)
Just thought I'd share!!

When I was little, I knew other little girls that did this, and I thought it was so cool that I started wearing shorts under my dresses (no one made me, I just wanted to be 'covered up' too). When I had a little girl, this was just a given to me. I agree 100% that this is the ONLY way to go w/ little girls and dresses! <3 u!

What a perfect idea! We live in the steamy hot south, and our 5 year old loves dresses. The other day, though, her daddy caught her putting heavy tights on to "cover up" on her own. I love the idea of shorts. Thanks!
That is such a good idea! Not only will you hide what needs to be hidden, you are also instilling modesty in them from the very beginning!

i am a preschool teacher and part of my orientation is asking all the moms with daughters to make sure they wear shorts under their dresses. If they aren't, I actually make them go home and get a pair. BETTER YET, is when they bring me extra shorts incase they ever forget.

With the colder months coming up, wearing jeans under your dress is another option. And when they grow and the dress is too short, jeans help with that, too! It's actually a fad to do so as well if you are a fashion-conscious sort of gal.
I have done this off and on with my daughter and once again thought…hmmmm we should go back to the short thing!! Thanks for the reminder!! Her new habit is nervously lifting her dress, night gown up and biting it in a shy manner!! What? It makes me nuts!!

I am constantly surprised and dismayed by how many mothers don't do this for their little girls. My sister and I used to wear those bicycle shorts under our skirts until we were teenagers, and you know, now I like to wear leggings (I wear long, long skirts and live where it gets bitterly cold.) This is also helpful when you're bending over, struggling to get your baby out of the backseat and the wind comes whipping down the parking lot, tugging your skirt up, up, and away. :)
