10 Days To Modest! Day Seven – Help Me Dress Modestly!

Bouquet Top, by Christa-Taylor

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 36-39

I have been receiving wonderful, thought-provoking questions from you all throughout this series. Some have really challenged me (and I like a challenge)! However, this is not an exhaustive study of modesty. My goal has been to inspire us all to strive for excellence when it comes to doing our part in the battle. I don’t have all the answers. I know that each person is responsible for their choices – men and women. Satan wants to divide. Let’s unify and do our part. Let’s submit our hearts to God in humble willingness to serve others in how we dress.

So, with all that said, let’s take a general look at some helpful tips for dressing modestly. The below link is a fun fashion test that was created by Dannah Gresh of Pure Freedom and is geared toward teens. However, it is applicable to us all.

Truth or Bare Fashion Test

I suggest printing the test out and taping it to your closest door or mirror. It is a very helpful guide! (These tips for dressing modestly works for me!)

Now I want to hear from you. What suggestions to you have in keeping modest dress?

*Don’t forget, tomorrow we link up with our favorite modest outfit/s! You can use an older picture you have where you are wearing an outfit you like, or take a new picture just for the fashion show. Also, if you don’t have a blog you can e-mail me a picture and I will post it. Let’s show the blog world that YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE FRUMPY TO BE MODEST!

Those are great links – I enjoyed reading them. Don't know if I have any other suggestions for modest dress, besides checking the obvious – does belly show when reaching arms up, does anything show front or back when bending over, does any cleavage show, and nothing too tight. I always try to go for a look that says "classy" (I don't always succeed with that – LOL).Looking forward to tomorrow!

When I was in college we told the girls on my hall that to tell if your pants are too tight to take one step forward and if they could grab fabric on thier back leg right below their rear they were ok. If not it was too tight. Just a helpful tip on deciding on an "iffy" pair of pants.

I was reading through your "10 Days To Modest" posts and I am very impressed. You have done a wonderful job covering [:)] all the issues. Thanks so much!

That's a great, cute poster! For our Worship Team, we have what we call the "Modesty Macarena". Cheesy, but effective. It covers all the areas. First, if a shirt drops lower than our pinky finger when our fist is placed on our chest, thumb right under our collarbone, it's too low. Next, if we can't grab material from the side of our shirts, it's too tight. Next, if we see skin when we raise our arms a little, it's too short. Then, if we can't grab a little of our pants or jeans out to the side, they're too tight. And finally, if our skirt comes above our knees when we sit, it's too short. Now, this is for when we sing in church, but really, don't we as representatives of Christ always want to dress without question?

My personal guidelines are: necklines no lower than three fingers below collarbone, (and wear a camisole if it's a loose-fitting blouse), and skirts should hit the knee when sitting (that's crucial, I think, lest the whole world get a direct shot of your unmentionables)no tummy,& no heiney when bending over (yuck!). I also try to avoid things that show the underside of my curves, if that makes sense! Lol… I've found extra long, fitted camisoles tucked into my bottoms really help modest-ify almost any blouse.

    HeathehLee's guidelines — above — are great!

I have given my children the right to tell me if they can see anything showing when I move around the house. I have to bend over, change diapers, vacuum etc…you get lots of opportunities for immodesty here and they are more than happy to tell you about it. They also have the right to tell each other, think *telling a toddler their panties are showing*. I believe this is good training for them to accept when later mommy or someone else has to tell them an outfit is not acceptable, and to give them the courage to speak the truth in love, when other Christians their age, are wearing something that is not appropriate.

Also, the rule in our house is, if it's not going to be appropriate for a young lady (9-14) to wear then it's not appropriate for mommy or toddlers. This includes bathing suits, skirt length, and tightness. Things that don't apply are make-up, bigger jewelry, and high heels. We do want some difference between a 2 year old and Mommy.

Suzanne– great rule about what's appropriate for kids and moms alike. Same goes for older and younger ladies. Recently, my mom (age 60) was frustrated about how all the clothes she sees in stores are for young people and inappropriate for her age. A light bulb went off in my head…if the clothes show "stuff" inappropriate for a 60-year-old to show, it's not appropriate for a 20-year-old, either! Tastes may differ between generations, so we might not wear the same styles, but the amount of coverage should not be greater for my mom than for me.
